The longstanding traditions of friendship lay a solid foundation for multifaceted and mutually beneficial cooperation between Russia and Thailand. Established during the Royal Visit of King Chulalongkorn to Russia in 1897, nowadays through the efforts of the both sides the Russian-Thai relations approached the level of strategic partnership.
A new era of our bilateral relations was opened by the first ever visit of the Head of Russian State to Thailand - State Visit of H.E. Mr. Vladimir V. Putin, President of the Russian Federation, in October 2003. The return visit by the invitation of the Russian President was the State Visit of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand to the Russian Federation on behalf of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand on July 2-11, 2007 to mark the 110th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Russian-Thai Diplomatic Relations. On her trip to Moscow and St.-Petersburg Her Majesty had an official dinner with the Russian President and visited the Petergof palace, where the historical meeting between the Russian Emperor Nikolas II and King Chulalongkorn of Thailand took place in 1897.
Both sides enjoy permanent strengthening of political, economic and cultural interaction as well as increase in people-to-people and business contacts. At 2006 the Russian-Thai trade turnover reached 1,8 million USD. Regular political dialogue reveals similar or close approaches of both sides to major global and regional problems. Russia and Thailand productively cooperate in the frameworks of the UN, APEC, Russian-ASEAN Dialogue, as well as ASEAN Regional Forum, Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building in Asia and Asia Cooperation Dialogue.
